The Food and Drug Administration is requiring the pharmacy company CVS to provide a drug that contains sildenafil (the active ingredient in Viagra) and tadalafil (the active ingredient in Cialis).
“This is a significant issue with the FDA’s ability to provide drugs containing sildenafil and tadalafil at affordable prices,” said Janet Woodcock, M. D., FDA’s Actingonut Health Commissioner. “This is not an appropriate regulatory situation.”
Drug companies must pay for drugs that contain sildenafil and tadalafil at the pharmacy’s cost, the FDA said. But the company can not provide a “sildenafil or tadalafil” formulation because of the potential for serious side effects, including heart risks and serious allergic reactions, the agency said.
“The FDA has made clear that it cannot determine the true cost for prescription drugs and that it is not evaluating prices on an individual basis,” Woodcock added.
The FDA said the agency will study the drug’s effectiveness and safety, and will advise consumers to use it “in the best interest of the health of the patient, their family, and the well-being of their pets and the general public.”
CVS also is requiring the pharmacy to provide a drug that contains sildenafil and tadalafil. The FDA has not provided information about the risks of sildenafil or tadalafil. However, in recent months, several drug companies have filed applications to provide similar drugs.
CVS has not responded to eDrugstore, which was not involved in the decision. The company said it will update its website to make sure that information about its drug is current and accurate.
CVS previously had a drug that contained the active ingredient in Viagra, and CVS had a drug that contained the active ingredient in Cialis. CVS is notifying its customers about the drug’s expiration date.

The site offers coupons for “all the prescription drugs that you can get at a pharmacy,” including Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, Cialis Max, Staxyn, Stendra, Stendra 30 mg, Stendra 30 mg, Levitra Staxyn 30 mg, Cialis 30 mg, Cialis 60 mg, Cialis 20 mg, Cialis 30 mg, Cialis 40 mg, Cialis 50 mg, Cialis 60 mg, Cialis 50 mg, Cialis 50 mg and Levitra 30 mg.
The FDA said that the information provided on CVS’s website is accurate and up-to-date.

Dr Mark Waugh, chairman of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, said: "It is a major concern for patients and a need for more research into this subject. It is important that clinicians and patients understand the risks associated with using this drug and how to take action to help stop its use."
He said: "We continue to to see patients taking the drug for a variety of reasons, but the drugs are still the preferred treatment for most erectile dysfunction, and if patients are using them recreationally, they should be aware of the potential drug-drug interactions.
"We will continue to work with patients to develop safer and more effective treatments for impotence."
Dr Waugh added: "Patients can now take the medication at home, and if they are concerned about the side effects, they should speak to their doctor. It is important for patients to be aware that this is not a first-line treatment for impotence, and that patients are not to use other medications that have similar side effects.
Dr Waugh said: "We will continue to work with patients to develop safer and more effective treatments for impotence."
He said: "We are in a great position to provide patients with the most up-to-date information on the safety of Viagra, and we will continue to work with patients to develop safer and more effective treatments for impotence."
